What is Adherent DBT?
“Adherent” or “Comprehensive” Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) refers to DBT that is delivered according to the model developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan and supported by decades of research. This includes the full treatment structure: weekly individual DBT therapy, weekly DBT skills group, phone coaching, and weekly consultation team for therapists. It also means therapists are trained to use specific strategies, behavioral principles, and dialectical interventions that are central to the model.
Providing DBT in this adherent way matters. Research has consistently shown that the full DBT model is what leads to meaningful change for clients, including reductions in life-threatening behaviors, improvements in emotional regulation, and building a life that feels worth living. When parts of the model are removed or significantly altered, outcomes are less reliable and clients may not receive the level of support they need.
In short, adherent DBT ensures clients receive the real thing: a treatment that is structured, supportive, research-backed, and delivered by a team that is continuously learning together. It reflects our commitment to offering care that truly works and honors the integrity of the model.
