Standard once-weekly outpatient therapy works well for many clients. But for medically stable clients who are appropriate for outpatient care and need greater therapeutic frequency or support than weekly sessions provide, our individualized intensive programs offer a higher level of clinical contact within an outpatient framework.
Our individualized intensive eating disorder programs are built around each client's specific diagnosis, treatment targets, and level of clinical need. There is no standardized group format. Every program is designed around the individual. Session frequency, session types, and treatment targets are determined at the outset and adjusted in real time based on how the client is responding.
Who Intensive Eating Disorder Treatment Is For
Intensive programming is appropriate for clients who:
- Have not made adequate progress in standard weekly outpatient treatment
- Are stepping down from a residential or partial hospitalization level of care and need a higher level of support than once-weekly therapy
- Need to make concentrated progress within a defined window, such as before returning to school or before a significant life transition
- Are experiencing a relapse and need an increased level of outpatient support to stabilize
- Are traveling from outside Northern Virginia for a focused course of treatment
We work with children, teens, and adults. For adolescents, families are active participants throughout the entire intensive program.
Intensive Treatment Options We Offer
Intensive FBT for Adolescent Anorexia and Bulimia
For adolescents receiving Family-Based Treatment, intensive delivery means more frequent family sessions, accelerated phase progression, and closer coordination between the treatment team and family throughout the week. This is appropriate when limited progress at standard frequency or the clinical complexity of the presentation warrants a more concentrated outpatient approach, for clients who remain medically stable and appropriate for outpatient care.
Families in intensive FBT receive coaching more frequently, which strengthens parental confidence in managing meals, responding to eating disorder behaviors, and maintaining progress between sessions.
Intensive CBT-E for Adults and Older Teens
CBT-E delivered intensively provides multiple individual sessions per week, allowing clients to work through the treatment protocol at an accelerated pace. This is particularly effective for adults with long-standing anorexia who have not responded to once-weekly treatment, or for those who need to make significant progress within a compressed timeframe.
During intensive CBT-E, behavioral experiments and cognitive work accumulate more quickly than in standard weekly treatment. Clients often report that the concentrated format helps them maintain momentum in a way that once-weekly sessions do not.
Intensive DBT for Eating Disorders With Emotion Dysregulation
For clients where emotion dysregulation is a primary driver of eating disorder behaviors, including restriction, bingeing, or purging as responses to emotional pain, intensive DBT provides concentrated individual therapy and accelerated skills training.
This format builds the distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills needed for sustained recovery more rapidly than standard weekly treatment. Intensive DBT for eating disorders can be delivered alongside eating disorder-specific treatment or as a primary focus when emotion dysregulation is the most urgent clinical target.
Intensive CBT-AR for ARFID
For clients with ARFID, intensive delivery allows for daily or near-daily food exposure sessions. Research supports intensive food exposure as producing faster expansion of food variety than once-weekly appointments. This format is particularly effective for clients with severe sensory sensitivity or significant fear of aversive consequences who need a higher frequency of supported exposures to build progress.
What Intensive Programming Looks Like Week to Week
Intensive programs at EBT Collaborative include multiple sessions per week, coordinated across treatment team members. A typical intensive week may include:
- Multiple individual therapy sessions targeting specific eating disorder behaviors and treatment hierarchies
- Nutrition counseling sessions with coordinated communication between therapist and dietitian
- Family sessions and parent coaching for adolescent clients
- Real-world exposure practice for ARFID or CBT-E clients
- Coordination with medical providers, schools, or other outside providers as needed
Frequency and format are determined by the clinical picture and adjusted throughout the program based on progress and response to treatment.
Stepping Down From Residential or PHP
One of the most important uses of individualized intensive programming is providing a structured stepping-down process for clients who have completed residential treatment or a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and are now medically and clinically appropriate for outpatient care. Moving directly from a highly structured environment to once-weekly outpatient therapy can create a gap in support that makes the transition more difficult.
Our intensive programs are designed to fill that gap: providing more outpatient structure than standard weekly therapy while supporting the client's gradual return to full daily functioning.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions per week does intensive treatment involve?
This varies by client and is determined at assessment. Most intensive programs involve two to five sessions per week depending on clinical need. The schedule is built around the individual and adjusted throughout treatment.
Is intensive treatment only for severe cases?
No. Intensive programming is also appropriate for clients who are clinically stable but have not been making progress at standard frequency, or those who have a limited window of availability and want to concentrate their treatment into a shorter period.
Can my teen do intensive treatment while staying in school?
In many cases, yes. We work with families to build a schedule that fits around school commitments where possible. For teens whose eating disorder is significantly interfering with school attendance, a temporary reduction in school hours may be discussed with the family.
Is intensive treatment available via telehealth?
Select intensive formats are available via telehealth for clients throughout Virginia. Not all intensive modalities translate equally well to a remote format. Your clinician will discuss what is appropriate for your specific situation at the assessment.
