Family Connections.

A free program created by NEABPD to help family members and friend of those with emotion dysregulation

Family Connections™ is a free, research-based 8-week course that meets weekly to provide education, skills training, and support for individuals who have a relationship with someone who experiences borderline personality disorder (BPD) or significant emotion dysregulation. Developed by Dr. Alan Fruzzetti and Dr. Perry Hoffman, the program is grounded in clinical research and professional expertise and is typically offered in a supportive community setting led by trained group leaders, many of whom are family members themselves.

The course provides current education about BPD and family functioning while teaching practical skills drawn from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Participants learn strategies to improve communication, practice validation, increase relationship mindfulness, strengthen coping skills, and build healthier family interactions. Family Connections also emphasizes peer support, helping participants develop an ongoing network of understanding and encouragement as they navigate the challenges of supporting a loved one.

Friends & Family™ is a free12-week course that meets weekly to help friends and family members better understand Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and learn advanced skills to support loved ones who are participating in a DBT program. The course focuses on translating DBT concepts into practical, real-life strategies so supporters can respond more effectively, reduce conflict, and strengthen relationships while maintaining healthy boundaries.

Participants learn core DBT concepts such as the biosocial model, mindfulness, validation, and the balance of acceptance and change. The program also includes training in distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and behavior-based approaches to understanding patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. Through discussion, role play, and practical skill application, friends and family members build confidence in setting limits, improving communication, and supporting recovery while also caring for their own well-being.
